Transition Planning for Military Families:

At Merriam Cherry Street Elementary, we understand that transitions can be challenging for military families. We offer school tours to make the transition to our school as smooth as possible. Families can schedule tours by calling our front office. During these tours, one of our highly trained student Safety Patrol members guides families through the campus, showcasing our welcoming environment. The tour concludes with our administrators or school counselor available to answer any further questions or concerns.

Academic Planning for Military Families:

Academic success is a priority for us, and we recognize the unique challenges military families may face due to frequent moves. Our staff includes military spouses and veterans who are sensitive to these challenges. To address potential learning gaps caused by relocation, we plan and prepare differentiated instruction for all students, ensuring that each child receives a personalized and effective education that helps them thrive academically.

Resources for Military Families:

Our school ensures that our military families receive an array of educational resources including access to online programs such as iReady and digital resources provided through Bay District Schools. Merriam Cherry Street Elementary uses the House System, which defines our school culture, and supports students in becoming the best leaders they can be while fostering a sense of belonging. We understand that students who move frequently may not always feel a sense of belonging, so our house system creates a school family within our larger school community.

Student-Led Transition Team (S2S Club):

Merriam Cherry Street proudly has Book Club, Odyssey of the Mind, Safety Patrol, ITV, and Library Assistants Club that meet regularly. Students have the opportunity to apply for any before or after-school club. Our Safety Patrol students are trained to take the lead as campus mentors, and they play a significant role in guiding and supporting military children. They are vital members of the student-led transition team and are recognized for embracing their roles with pride and responsibility.

Support for Military ESE Children:

At Merriam Cherry Street Elementary, our ESE students receive support tailored to the needs outlined in their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). We take pride in creating an inclusive environment where we love and support our students wherever they are on their educational journey. Our mission is to help them reach their fullest potential.

Military Recognition Events:

We value and honor our military community. At Merriam Cherry Street Elementary, we celebrate Purple Up Day, a fun and festive occasion. In addition, several grade levels create cards for veterans and similar initiatives, showing our appreciation for their service and sacrifice. We include an invitation to military families on our family night flyers. We also showcase our military families and staff members on a bulletin board in our cafeteria. This allows all students and staff the opportunity to see the military heroes who are a part of our cheetah family.

Mental Health Resources For Military Families:

We understand that our students' mental health and well-being, including military children, are paramount. Merriam Cherry Street Elementary has a Triad mental health team that provides student Community of Care referrals. We also have a tiered system of support for behavior, including assigning a trusted adult for daily check-in and check-out. This program builds relationships and provides students with a safe adult on campus.
